The Godfather of Extreme Horror is back!
Just in time to give your loved ones perhaps the most sick and twisted Christmas Present imaginable, the latest installment of Edward Lee’s White Trash Gothic series released on Christmas Day, just in time to traumatize us all for the festive season.
When we last left the writer, and his oversexed companions, Snowie and Dawn, they were on the hunt for the notorious monster of Luntville legend. Things went a little awry and, after a series of ‘unfortunate’ events, they had unwittingly opened a gateway to Hell itself!
Featuring the despicable mafioso Paulie Vinchetti, of The Pig and Header 2 infamy and the Larkins from Header 3, as well as revisiting the hellscape of the City Infernal series and the mysterious black-robed women of The Coven, among many more, Edward Lee presents the latest chapter in his magnum opus, pulling together all his most detestable characters from a career spanning almost forty years, into one messed up, epic tale of perversions beyond your wildest imagination.
A trigger warning for this book would be book-length in and of itself so, rest assured, if there is a subject, theme or act which one might find potentially distressing, it is all present and accounted for in White Trash Gothic 3. Edward Lee is rarely restrained anyway, but his latest ranks up there as one of the most extreme and over the top. You can’t help but be impressed when a writer with almost 50 books to his name, especially one who is so often copied but rarely matched, is able to come up with so many new and inventive ways to disgust and appall you.
Is the whole thing a little self-indulgent? Perhaps. Lee has, after all, made himself the main character in the book. Does that in any way take away from how nauseatingly entertaining the whole thing is? Absolutely not! Lee has certainly earned it. The White Trash Gothic series has been a consistently tongue in cheek joyride and the pleasure Lee is clearly taking his literary equivalent of a Greatest Hits album is infectious. There is little or nothing in the way of coherent plot or story progression. Instead, we’re taken down an Alice in Wonderland-style rabbit-hole of mayhem, with characters bouncing haphazardly from one horrifying set piece to the other. Like the Evil Dead films, story and character development take a back seat to spectacle and visceral visuals, where the goal is pure entertainment, a goal that White Trash Gothic 3 achieves gleefully.
If you can leave your conscience and sense of good taste at the door, then there is a great deal of fun to be had with White Trash Gothic 3. Nobody writes extreme horror like Edward Lee, and he is at the top of his game here. So, get your sick buckets at the ready and prepare to be dragged kicking and screaming through obscenities and debaucheries only Edward Lee is capable of.
